植物に物理的ストレスを与えるとエチレンガスが生成されて丈夫でコンパクトな姿になることを知った。葉水を施してきたゴールドクレストがそうしていない個体と比べて引き締まった姿になりつつあるのはそのためなのだろうか。本来は高く伸びるはずの樹木が高山ではねじれて矮小（クルムホルツ・Krummholz）になるのは風雨・風雪がギプスになるだけでなく、それらストレスに打ち勝つための内的要因が働いて成長の方向性が変わるんだろう。

ところで、すくなくともネット上ではゴールドクレストは日本の気候にあっていないので育てるのが難しいということになっている。観葉植物や園芸品種としてとらえるとそうなのかもしれないけど、カリフォルニアのモントレーベイ周辺のヒノキ科樹木からできた品種だと知って、ヒノキ盆栽の育て方を応用してみたら夏も冬もとても元気だ。肥料なしでもそれなりのスピードで成長している。この品種に対する園芸のガイドラインに反して植え替えで根を完全にほぐし、かなり切り詰めたけど葉の色は良くなった。（根の切り口がイオン化しないようにチタン製のハサミを使った。根かき棒もチタン製テントペグを代用した。）日本の気候に合っていないのではなくて、腐葉土などを混ぜるのがよくないのだと思う。


one of my friends who was into philosophy recommended Mario Perniola to me some years ago.  I got the title recommended, but never started it.  Now at least I made a pile of philosophy titles on my second work station that's free of computer.  Time to let them affect my brain chemistry just gradually.  A Zen master once told me that sometimes one has to be 立文字 (instead of 不立文字).

だいぶ昔に別のところに記していたブログを読み直すことがある。２００９年３月１１日のエントリーをここで再稼働させてみる。文章に出てくるダンカン・ヒッギンス先生(Duncan Higgins)がたまにベルゲンに教えに来ると明らかに生徒の雰囲気が変わり、みんなインスパイア状態になっていた。僕の作風に良い影響を与えるだろうと、サイモン・シャーマやW.G.ゼーバルトといった作家の本を勧めたりしてくれたのを覚えている。

以下の文章内で予告していたエキシビジョン（グループ展）などを記録した集団ブログのページもある。それは成功に終わったし、成長もできた。

終着駅からの発車時刻

版画学部と写真学部が新しい校舎へ移転中の関係でクラスの一つがベルゲン駅のすぐ横にあるホテル・テルミヌス（終着駅）のカンファレンスルームなどで行われている。今日はそのクラスを受け持つイギリス人の芸術家・講師、 ダンカン・ヒッギンスとの個別テュートリアルが一階レストランの小ホールを貸しきって行われた。シャンデリアが架かる綺麗な部屋の中でコンセプテュアル・ アートの制作、方向性などといったアドバイスを受ける不思議（贅沢）な機会だった。ヒッギンス氏は昨日のうちにこのクラスを取る生徒全員が持ち寄った作品を目にしていたことからテュートリアルの方向性も自然な流れになった。彼は昨日のプレゼンテーションから何を見抜いていたのだろうか。今日の話の中で、何かを書いているかと質問された事が印象に残っている。それだけでなく、すぐに書き始めたほうが良いというはっきりとしたアドバイスをもらった。そしてその文章はど のようであれこの先に撮るであろう写真に付随するものになると言っていた。（というわけで書いている。）

一ヵ月後、このクラスの締めくく りとして、参加した生徒でエキシビションを行う。それについての方向性も話し合うことができた。この週末、鉄道を利用して２時間ほどのところにある田舎町で友人達と時間を共にする予定があることから、その小旅行をテーマにしようかと伝えたところ、良いフィードバックを受けることができた。

４月から５月にかけての自由制作期間のテーマについてもアドバイスをもらうことができた。ベルリン、プレンツラウアーベルクで進行中のジェントリフィケーションについて研究している友達からインスピレーションを受け、映像化していきたいと伝えると、待たずにそれについて何かを始めたほうが良いとのことだった。

物理的、時間的な先にあるこの週末の僕にとっては象徴的な集まりの中、友達、自然や街などという被写体を撮ったり、文章として残すという行為から生まれるものは非線形の時間軸にある自己が司っているという、というところまで話し合うことができた。意味を超えて、あるいは意味など気にせずに、とにかく今は制作として書き始めること、旅が始まっていようがいまいが、撮り始めることが重要だということをアドバイスされた。

心だけは、今日から永遠的に芸術家として止まることなくフルタイム稼動していくことになった。

This is such an outdated discovery, but I found that Fujifilm Natura 1600 color negative film has two different ISO emulsions on one surface of film.  It has both ISO 400 sensitivity emulsion besides ISO 1600 sensitivity, so if I shoot at 400, the image becomes predominantly over exposed by ISO 1600 emulsion, yet with enough details and color by ISO 400 emulsion.  This is an easy solution to get high key mesmerizing impression.  This could also be a solution to combine Dutch light impression and Giorgio de Chirico kind of high contrast light impression into one.

The visible spectrum of light for human is rather narrow, and among its narrow range which we call as colors, there are violet and red as two extreme edges of visibility.  Any light outside of these two sides fade to be invisible.  Such invisible spectrum can still affect us in various ways such as generating vitamin D, sun burn, snow blindness by UV or heat and warmth by Infrared.  In extreme case, far outer spectrum outside of UV direction (frequency) such as certain spectrum of radiation can damage our DNA.

Some animals or photo film can see little further out of the spectrum than what we can see:  Butterflies can see UV which make them distinguish gender by looking at wings, and vipers and cobras etc. have infrared sensors to feel approaching prey or enemy.

In such sense, the void that I came to realize through the synchronicity which is mentioned in my previous log (in Japanese as I could not find the proper English word for 虚空 which is actually slightly different than void.) also does have color even though its invisible.  As a photographer I still have to cling on to the outer edge of visible spectrum to portray something that's outside of visible spectrum for the sake of photographic work for the viewer.  One of the method I came to use to do this was the effect of halo and haze around object which can be photographically emphasized by special filter that cuts all the other spectrum of light except deep blue which is the neighbor of invisible UV.

Nobel Laureate in physics Dr. Masatoshi Koshiba once told us that he likes Mozart because Mozart's pieces actually make him hear the notes (and perhaps melody) that are not actually sounding.  Many people would agree that such composer's pieces make us sense beyond the existing notes by giving us vectors by sound and silence arranged in time.

Some of the old, yet post Edo period Japanese art finally started speaking to me.  The influence of western art perspective on these "new" Japanese prints gave me a kind of relief for some reason.  I came to know a Japanese printmaker and painter named Kawase Hasui.
  
Hasui's works are predominantly dark, cold and snowy with decent amount of exceptions which to me are actually emphasizing dark pieces or vice versa.

In the darkest time of the year, I'm discovering a new direction, or rather long forgotten trajectory.

   
My grandmother (as well as my mother) was a Ikebana teacher certified by the grandmaster of Ohara school of Ikebana.  Grandma ran a studio at my home to teach Ikebana, and although I never became my her student, I was oriented to the studio full of her disciples and their study works, and the meditative attitude and discipline.   

Unlike other older schools of Ikebana, Ohara school of Ikebana is a fairly new school, established after the end of Edo period.  So, its style is less traditional to deal with "newly introduced" western flowers and plants at that time.  Accordingly, there are more variations in format of compositional perspectives. 

I wonder how much I was influenced to interpret ordinary or obscure scenes with such perspective format.  I thought I already became aware of such thing during my study years in Norway, but it seems that it is still far beyond my conscious mind that actually frames my photographic compositions.

It was a highly disciplined, carefully pre-meditated, and self sacrificial incident to win an honor.

I wonder why the story has been surviving in Japan vividly in various forms to this day. 

...The madness of the story actually sustains calmness in today's world that is still crazy, ugly, hypocritical and unjust sometimes. 

weather forecast as verbal zen garden

One of the most accurate, up to date, and objective news from all kinds of media is weather forecast.  I sometimes get tired of watching TV news or internet news sources, but I cannot help it at the same time.  It is a relief that weather forecast are giving me some intercessions. 

When we go into news details or rumors, we are going into the state of altered consciousness.  We are actually rendering news and rumors into what ancient people regarded as myths.  We need stories to live by. 

I heard that British like to talk about weather.  If I say that in other countries other than UK or Japan, it would sound like irony as lack of subject to share, but I think it's beautiful when people can talk about weather while there are many other rumors in the atmosphere.
