Daily release of cedar pollen cloud reminds me that I also have to get busy with taking care of Bonsai seedlings in this time of the year.  So far I've repotted Pinus mugo rostrata, Pinus sylvestris, Tsuga diversifolia and Trident maple seedlings.  Pinus parviflora and other Japanese pines can wait in line for few more weeks until around the cherry blossom season.  Few days ago, a spider on a leaf of Maki (Podocarpus macrophyllus) already caught a fly (possibly the first catch after winter), looked at me with smug face with multiple eyes.

"Hold On" by Wilson Phillips was often heard on radio or seen as music video even in Japan around the time when I was first exposed to American (California) life back in 1990.  For some reason, I did remember its promotion video shot high on the mountain.  But, just now after seeing its music video again, I came to know why Bonsai trees and Krummholz trees cheer me up these days.

フランス外人部隊に関する、ごく最近のFrance24によるリポートを見ていて、時代、そして世代の移り変わりを見た気がした。フランスのソリダリテは着々と歴史を重ねている。ある外人部隊の兵士はディスパッチされた乾いたアフリカの地でインタビューに答え、「フランスに帰ったら真っ先にシャワーを浴びて、街にでて寿司を食べ、冷えたコーラを飲みたい…」と言っていた。

作品に推敲を重ねるのではなく考え方や視点そのものも推敲しなければならない。そんなことを日々行っていた時期もあったけど巡航高度に達すると機体は自動操縦でも飛んでしまう。

植物に物理的ストレスを与えるとエチレンガスが生成されて丈夫でコンパクトな姿になることを知った。葉水を施してきたゴールドクレストがそうしていない個体と比べて引き締まった姿になりつつあるのはそのためなのだろうか。本来は高く伸びるはずの樹木が高山ではねじれて矮小（クルムホルツ・Krummholz）になるのは風雨・風雪がギプスになるだけでなく、それらストレスに打ち勝つための内的要因が働いて成長の方向性が変わるんだろう。

ところで、すくなくともネット上ではゴールドクレストは日本の気候にあっていないので育てるのが難しいということになっている。観葉植物や園芸品種としてとらえるとそうなのかもしれないけど、カリフォルニアのモントレーベイ周辺のヒノキ科樹木からできた品種だと知って、ヒノキ盆栽の育て方を応用してみたら夏も冬もとても元気だ。肥料なしでもそれなりのスピードで成長している。この品種に対する園芸のガイドラインに反して植え替えで根を完全にほぐし、かなり切り詰めたけど葉の色は良くなった。（根の切り口がイオン化しないようにチタン製のハサミを使った。根かき棒もチタン製テントペグを代用した。）日本の気候に合っていないのではなくて、腐葉土などを混ぜるのがよくないのだと思う。


one of my friends who was into philosophy recommended Mario Perniola to me some years ago.  I got the title recommended, but never started it.  Now at least I made a pile of philosophy titles on my second work station that's free of computer.  Time to let them affect my brain chemistry just gradually.  A Zen master once told me that sometimes one has to be 立文字 (instead of 不立文字).
